Why a full EV dies from a dead 12V battery
The high-voltage pack in an electric vehicle is isolated behind contactors — physical relays that stay open until the car decides it's safe to close them. Those contactors are coil-operated and run on 12 volts. So does the body control module, the infotainment computer, the door handle actuators, the charge port latch, and the BMS itself.
When the 12V drops below roughly eleven volts, the car can no longer close its own contactors. The 400-volt pack under the floor might hold seventy kilowatt-hours and it is completely unreachable. It's the electrical equivalent of a full fuel tank with no way to turn the key.
Some vehicles will top the 12V from the main pack while parked, which helps, but it only works if the car can still wake up to make the decision. Past a certain depth of discharge it cannot, and it needs an external jump to get back over the line.
