What to do in the first sixty seconds of a blowout
Do not brake hard, and do not jerk the wheel. A blowout pulls the car toward the failed corner, and the instinct to correct violently is what turns a tire failure into a crash. Ease off the accelerator, hold the wheel firmly straight, and let the vehicle slow itself before steering gently toward the shoulder.
Get as far off the roadway as the shoulder allows — past the rumble strip, onto grass if it's firm and level. Hazards on immediately. On a divided highway, exit through the passenger door and move behind the guardrail or well up the embankment, upstream of your vehicle so you can see traffic coming.
Then call. Tell dispatch the highway, the direction, the nearest exit or mile marker, and whether you're on a narrow shoulder. That last detail changes how we dispatch and whether we bring a second unit for traffic protection.
