The app takes the request, a third-party contractor accepts it eventually, and that contractor may or may not have ever touched an electric vehicle. Why Tesla owners end up calling an independent

Tesla roadside is a dispatch layer, not a fleet. When you request help in the app, the job goes to a contracted third party in your area. In dense metros with EV-literate contractors that works. In DFW during a summer afternoon with dozens of concurrent requests, it becomes a queue, and the accepting contractor is often a general towing company.

The failure mode isn't the wait — it's the truck that arrives. A general tow operator without pucks lifting a Model 3 on the rocker folds the pinch weld. One without transport-mode knowledge winches a car with locked rear motors onto a bed and flat-spots the tires or damages the drive unit.

The Tesla 12V failure, explained properly

The 12V battery in a Tesla powers the contactors, the computers, the door handles, and the charge port. When it fails, the high-voltage pack is unreachable regardless of state of charge, and the car becomes a sealed object — doors won't open from outside, frunk won't pop, screen stays black.

Tesla designed an emergency path in: two leads behind the tow-eye cover in the front bumper accept external 12V power, which pops the frunk and restores enough system power to open the doors. Details vary by model and build year, and getting the cover off without marking paint is technique.

Newer builds moved to a lithium-ion 12V, which lasts longer but fails more abruptly — less warning, more sudden. Either way the fix is the same: restore power, test, and replace if the battery won't hold. We carry both chemistries.

Jack mode, tow mode, and why they matter

Before any Tesla goes on a jack, the car should be in jack mode, which disables the air suspension from self-leveling and prevents the car settling onto a lift point mid-job. Skipping it on an air-suspension Model S or X risks the vehicle moving while a technician is under a wheel arch.

For transport, Tesla motors physically lock when unpowered — the car will not roll freely, and pulling it anyway can damage the drive unit and flat-spot tires. Transport mode releases the parking brake and allows the wheels to turn, but it requires the car to have power, which is a problem when the 12V is the reason you called.

The correct sequence is: restore 12V power, enable transport mode, then move the vehicle. Where power can't be restored, wheel skates go under the locked axle. This is the single most common piece of EV knowledge missing from general tow operators, and it's the reason we get called after somebody else has already tried.
