Why a replacement battery often doesn't fix it

When a 12V battery dies repeatedly, the battery is usually the victim rather than the culprit. Three causes account for nearly all of it: a parasitic draw that never lets the battery rest, a DC-DC converter that has stopped topping the 12V from the main pack, or a module that fails to sleep and keeps a network bus awake all night.

None of those are visible from a voltage reading at the terminals. Finding a parasitic draw means letting the vehicle go fully to sleep — which on modern EVs can take forty minutes — then measuring current with the car undisturbed and pulling fuses systematically to isolate the circuit.

It's slower than swapping a battery, which is exactly why most providers don't do it. It's also the only approach that ends the problem.

What state of health actually tells you

State of health expresses current usable capacity as a percentage of the pack's original capacity. A three-year-old EV in Texas commonly reads somewhere between 90 and 95 percent, and that is unremarkable — lithium chemistry loses capacity fastest early and then flattens out.

What matters more than the headline number is cell balance. A pack whose modules sit within a narrow voltage spread is healthy. A pack with one module consistently lagging is heading toward a fault, and it will show up as reduced range and eventually a warning long before the overall percentage looks alarming.

Texas heat is the dominant degradation factor here, well ahead of mileage. Cars parked outside all summer in Dallas age their packs faster than identical cars in a garage, which is worth knowing when you're evaluating a used purchase.

The first is the 12V battery under load. A resting voltage reading tells you almost nothing — a battery can show 12.4 volts at the terminals and collapse to eight the moment the contactors ask for current. We use a conductance tester that reports actual delivered capacity against the battery's rated figure, so the number we give you reflects what the car experiences rather than what a multimeter sees.

The second is parasitic draw. Every modern electric vehicle keeps modules awake for connectivity, remote climate, sentry recording, and over-the-air updates, and the acceptable overnight draw is a specific figure per platform. Measuring it correctly means letting the car fall completely asleep, which on some vehicles takes forty minutes, then reading current with the vehicle undisturbed and pulling fuses methodically until the offending circuit shows itself.

The third is fault codes — stored, pending, and permanent — read across the modules the manufacturer exposes rather than just the generic OBD-II set. Pending codes are the useful ones, because they capture the intermittent fault that was gone by the time we arrived. The fourth is high-voltage pack data: state of health as a percentage of original capacity, plus module-level cell balance, which predicts trouble long before the headline percentage looks alarming.

You leave with a written report containing all four sets of numbers. That report is what makes a warranty conversation with a dealer productive, and it is what tells you honestly whether a used electric vehicle is worth buying.
