Sometimes the roadside answer is transport. Hub or suspension damage, a high-voltage fault, a wheel that cannot be made safe on scene, a shifter that will not leave Park, a location too dangerous to work in, or a garage with clearance we cannot work under. In those cases the priority shifts from fixing the car to moving it without adding a second repair bill.

This is where electric vehicles get damaged most often. An EV cannot be flat-towed with any wheel on the ground driving a motor — regenerative drag through an unpowered motor generates current with nowhere to go, and the drive unit pays for it. Most EVs also lock their motors when unpowered, so the car will not roll onto a bed at all without either transport mode enabled or skates under the locked axle.

Why an EV must never be flat-towed

On a gas car, towing with the driven wheels on the ground is a lubrication problem — the transmission spins without oil pressure. On an electric car it's an electrical problem, and a worse one. A motor whose wheels are turning is a generator. With the car unpowered, that generated current has nowhere to go, and the result ranges from a fried inverter to a destroyed drive unit.

Dolly towing has the same issue unless the raised axle is the only driven one, which on a dual-motor EV — most of them — is never true. Every manufacturer specifies flatbed transport with all four wheels off the ground or on skates.

The second issue is the parking mechanism. Most EVs lock the motor when unpowered, so the wheels won't turn at all. A general operator who tries to winch a locked car onto a bed drags it, flat-spotting tires at best and damaging the drive unit at worst.

Transport mode and skates

Transport mode — Tesla's version is the best known, but most manufacturers have an equivalent — releases the parking mechanism so the wheels roll freely. It requires the car to have 12V power and be awake, which is a problem precisely when a dead 12V is the reason the car needs moving.

So the correct sequence is: restore 12V power first, enable transport mode, then load. Where power can't be restored at all, wheel skates go under the locked axle so the car rolls on the skates rather than on locked tires.

This sequence is the single most commonly skipped step in EV transport, and it's why we stay for the load. Coordinating a truck is easy; making sure the truck does it right is the service.

When transport is the right call instead of a roadside fix

Our default is to finish the job in the lane you are sitting in, because that is faster and cheaper for you than any tow. There are five situations where that judgment goes the other way, and knowing them saves an argument on the shoulder.

First, structural damage. A bent hub, a sheared stud pattern, a control arm that moved in a curb strike — the wheel can be reattached but it cannot be trusted at speed. Second, a high-voltage fault or a pack warning. That is a facility repair with equipment we do not carry to a roadside call, and driving it is a risk nobody should take. Third, a wheel or tire that cannot be made safe with what a mobile truck can carry, usually a sidewall tear with no matching size available.

Fourth, location. A blind curve on a tollway ramp, a live traffic lane with no shoulder, or a flooded underpass is not a place to spend forty minutes under a car. We move the vehicle first and finish the work somewhere safe. Fifth, clearance — some parking structures do not give enough headroom to lift and work, so the car comes out on a low-clearance bed before anything else happens.

Where we deliver, and what happens after the load

You choose the destination. Most transports go to a manufacturer service center, an independent EV-capable shop, a body shop your insurer has approved, or straight to your own driveway when the repair can wait for a scheduled appointment.

We call ahead. A dealer service drive that closes at six is useless at six-fifteen, and a car dropped in a locked lot with nobody expecting it becomes your problem for a weekend. We confirm the receiving location is open and willing before the truck leaves, and we send you the driver's details and the ETA in writing.

Documentation matters more on an EV than on a gas car, because damage arguments after the fact are expensive. Before loading we photograph the wheels, rockers, pack shielding and existing damage, and you get those photos. If the vehicle arrives with something that was not there when it left, the record already exists.
