Getting locked out of an electric vehicle is a different problem than getting locked out of a Camry. Half the calls we run are not mechanical at all — the doors are unlocked as far as the car is concerned, and the car simply cannot hear the key. A phone with a dead battery, Bluetooth switched off, a key card that fell out of pairing, or a 12V battery too flat to run the handle actuators all produce the same symptom: you standing outside your own car.

EV Rescue handles every version of it. We diagnose whether the fault is the key, the phone, the 12V system, or a genuine mechanical lockout, then use non-destructive entry technique appropriate to the vehicle — inflatable wedges, long-reach tools, and where relevant the manufacturer's own emergency access path.

What we do not do is treat an EV like a rental car with a slim jim. Modern EV doors are frameless glass on a motorized regulator with side-curtain airbag wiring in the pillar. The wrong tool in the wrong gap costs more than any lockout call.

Why EV lockouts are usually electronic, not mechanical

Traditional lockouts had one cause: the key was inside and the door was locked. Electric vehicles introduced authentication. The car is looking for a credential — a phone over Bluetooth, a card over NFC, a fob over UWB — and if that conversation fails, the doors stay shut regardless of where the key physically is.

That changes the fix. Half our calls end without any entry tool at all, because the real problem was a phone in low-power mode with Bluetooth throttled, or a key card that needed to be tapped on a different spot of the B-pillar than the owner was trying. Diagnosis first is not a formality; it's usually the whole job.

The rest are genuine access problems, and those we solve with wedge-and-reach technique adapted to frameless glass and motorized regulators.

The Tesla-specific cases we see weekly

Phone key failure leads by a wide margin. Tesla's phone key depends on a persistent Bluetooth connection, and iOS or Android background restrictions, a low-power mode, or an OS update that reset app permissions all break it silently. Most owners discover it in a parking lot.

Key card failures come next. The card must be tapped on a specific area of the B-pillar, and the read zone is small and unmarked. Cards also lose pairing after certain software updates, and a card that was never re-paired sits in a wallet doing nothing.

Then there's the dead-12V case, which presents as a lockout and is actually an electrical failure. Flush handles will not present, and no amount of pulling changes that. We treat this as a jump-start job with an entry component, using the front-bumper access point to restore power first.

How we open a car without damaging it

Non-destructive entry is a discipline. A professional air wedge is inserted at a specific point along the door edge, protected by film, and inflated in small increments to create a gap of a few millimeters — enough for a sheathed reach tool, not enough to deform the frame. On frameless-glass doors the wedge placement changes, because the glass has no frame to bear against and will crack if loaded wrong.

Inside the door aperture, the reach tool has to avoid the side-curtain airbag wiring in the pillar and the window regulator motor. On vehicles with electronic interior release buttons, we press the button rather than pulling a mechanical lever, because on many EVs there is no mechanical lever within reach.

None of this is fast if done properly, and all of it is faster than a body shop appointment. Every technician we send has done it on your specific model before.

How to avoid the next lockout

Keep a physical key card or fob somewhere that is not your phone and not inside the car — a wallet, a bag, a partner's keyring. Every EV manufacturer ships one, and almost every owner leaves it in a drawer at home.

Pair a second phone if your household has one. Check that the key card is actually paired rather than assuming, by locking the car and opening it with the card alone once a month. And if your handles have started to hesitate before presenting, that is a 12V battery giving you notice — deal with it before it turns into a 2 a.m. call.
